Sign In to Hint with a Passkey

Use Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or your device PIN to sign in to Hint without a password.

What is a passkey?

A passkey is a sign-in key that your device creates and stores for you. When you sign in, your device asks you to confirm it's you with Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or your device PIN. Hint never sees your fingerprint or face.

Passkeys are saved in your device's password manager, such as iCloud Keychain (iPhone, iPad, and Mac), Google Password Manager (Android and Chrome), or a password manager like 1Password. If that password manager syncs, your passkey is available on your other devices too.

Passkeys have a few advantages over passwords:

  • Faster sign-in. No password to type or remember.

  • Phishing protection. A passkey only works on Hint's real sign-in page, so a fake site can't capture it.

  • Nothing to leak. Hint stores no secret that could be stolen and reused.

Note: A passkey is an extra way to sign in. It does not replace your email and password, and it does not turn off Google sign-in.

Before you start

  • You need a Hint login with an email and password. You set up a passkey after a normal sign-in.

  • Your device and browser must support passkeys. Current versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, Android, Windows, Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox do.

Set up a passkey

  1. Sign in to Hint with your email and password as usual.

  2. After you sign in, Hint offers to set up a passkey. Click Use passkeys.

  3. Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or your device PIN.

  4. Your passkey is saved to your device's password manager, and Hint opens.

If you'd rather not set one up right now, click Continue to app.

Passkey on your phone, signing in on a computer? When your browser asks, choose the option to use a phone or tablet. Scan the QR code with your phone and confirm there.

What happens if I delete my passkey?

Deleting a passkey from your device or password manager does not lock you out of Hint, and it does not change your account. That passkey simply stops working, and you can sign in with your email and password instead.

  • Your account is unaffected. Your practice, settings, and access stay the same.

  • Hint can't restore a deleted passkey. It lives only on your device or in your password manager.

  • You can set up a new one. Sign in with your email and password, then click Use passkeys when Hint offers.

Tip: On iPhone, iPad, and Mac, deleted passkeys stay in the Passwords app under Recently Deleted for 30 days and can be recovered there. Other password managers may have a similar option.

Sign in without a passkey

You can always sign in the traditional way:

  1. On the Hint sign-in page, enter your email address and click Continue.

  2. Enter your password.

  3. If your practice requires two-factor authentication, enter the code from your authenticator app.

If you use Google sign-in, that continues to work too.

Forgot your password? See Create and Manage Your Password.

Need your two-factor authentication reset? Ask an admin at your practice, or see How to Reset MFA for a User.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use a passkey? No. Passkeys are optional. Your email and password always work.

Can I have more than one passkey? Yes. You can set one up on each device or password manager you use.

I got a new phone. Do I need a new passkey? If your passkeys sync through iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, or another password manager, your Hint passkey follows you. If not, sign in with your email and password and set up a new passkey.

Can I see or remove my passkeys inside Hint? Not at this time. Passkeys are managed in your device's password manager.

Can someone else use my passkey? Only someone who can unlock your device. Don't save a Hint passkey on a shared computer or a device others can unlock.
