This is the set-up guide for those who own the Verifone P400 hardware. If you need to order or set up a new BBPOS WisePOS™ E card reader, you'll want to use this set-up guide instead.

HintOS only works with the Stripe-supplied Verifone P400 and BBPOS WisePOS™ E hardware. If you already own this hardware you do not need to purchase a new one.

Verifone P400 Card Reader Setup

Turning the reader on and off

To turn on the Verifone P400, securely plug the P400 connector cable into the port on the bottom of the reader. The cover slides over the port to hold the cable in place. Plug the power adapter into the connector cable and into a power outlet. Even when it's not in use, leave the Verifone P400 plugged in to receive automatic software updates. If you need to turn the reader off, remove the power source.

Activating your card reader

Once you have received your card reader follow these steps to connect it to your Hint account:

  1. Make sure your reader is on standby mode

  2. Enter the key sequence 0-7-1-3-9 to populate a unique registration code.

  3. In Hint, navigate to Admin > Integrations > Card Readers

  4. Click the button '+ Add Card Reader'

  5. Enter your card reader's unique registration code in the 'Code' field

  6. Click 'Add'

Connecting the reader to the internet

Verifone P400 requires an internet connection to communicate with Stripe, managing connectivity through a LAN. The reader must connect to the same local network as your point of sale application via WiFi or Ethernet.

WiFi (Beta)

If you’re setting up a new device, follow the on-screen prompts to connect to the internet using WiFi. To start over, press the red X button on the keypad. Your WiFi network must use WPA-Personal or WPA2-Personal encryption and be password protected. WiFi is not supported for non-password-protected networks or enterprise networks.

To switch networks, or connect an already online reader to a WiFi network, press 0WIFI (0-9-4-3-4) on the keypad and follow the prompts. Attempting to join a new network disconnects the reader from any existing wireless connection. There’s no fallback to the previously connected network.

Ethernet

Connect an Ethernet cable from your router to the Verifone P400, using the ETH port (not the RS232 port). The reader obtains an IP address using DHCP. As soon as the network cable is plugged in, the reader attempts to establish communication with Stripe.

The Verifone P400 resets its priority to Ethernet when rebooting. Even if previously configured for WiFi, the reader switches to Ethernet if it detects an Ethernet cable connection while starting up.
