This feature is in beta 🧪 Quick Checkout is being released to a limited group of practices. Behavior and design may change as we incorporate beta feedback. |
Overview
Quick Checkout is a point-of-sale style screen for your front desk. Instead of building an invoice, saving it, and then collecting payment in a separate step, your staff can search your charge item catalog, add items to a cart, provide a total cost, and take payment — all from one page.
With Quick Checkout, your practice can:
Search and filter your full charge item and package catalog by name or category
Add items to a cart and adjust quantities without leaving the screen
See membership and package discounts applied live, with the reason for each discount
See an accurate grand total - subtotal, tax, and credit card fees - before charging
Charge a saved card or card reader, or issue the invoice for the patient to pay later
Before You Begin
Getting access
Quick Checkout is enabled by Hint on a per-practice basis during the beta. There is no setting for you to turn on yourself.
📋 Required Setup Reach out to your Hint contact to join the Quick Checkout beta. Once it is enabled, the new experience appears automatically for your staff. |
What to have set up first
Quick Checkout uses the charges, taxes, and payment settings you already have. To get the most out of it:
Charge items and categories: the catalog on the left is your existing charge item list. Items assigned to a category will appear for the selected category.
Packages: packages appear in the catalog alongside items and are labeled as Package.
Tax profiles: set up under Admin → Charges & Taxes → Taxes. Tax appears on the cart once you start a payment.
Payment methods: a card on file makes checkout fastest, though staff can also add a new card or use a card reader at checkout.
💡 Permissions Quick Checkout follows your existing charge permissions. Read-only roles do not see the buttons that open it. |
Opening Quick Checkout
There are two ways in.
Option A: The $ button on a patient's chart
Open the patient's chart.
Click the $ icon in the quick actions row of the patient header.
Quick Checkout opens on that patient's current draft invoice. If they don't have a recent draft, Hint creates one for you.
If you are already in a draft invoice, clicking the $ icon will switch the view to Quick Checkout. Click the Switch to Invoice View button at the top of the pricing summary view to switch back.
💡 No duplicate drafts Clicking $ again for the same patient reopens the same draft rather than creating a second one. For a dependent, the draft belongs to the payer, exactly as one-off invoices work today. |
Option B: Add Charges from the patients list
From the patients list, click Add Charges.
In the Who are you adding charges for? window, search for and select a patient.
Quick Checkout opens on that patient's draft invoice.

Building the Cart
Finding what you're selling
The left side of the screen is your catalog. Each row shows the item name, whether it is an Item or a Package, and its price.
Search: type part of a name in the search box to narrow items and packages. Click the × button on the right of the field to clear it.
Categories: pick a category in the sidebar to show only that category's items. All items returns to the full list.
Search and category filters work together, so you can search within a category.
Adding items and setting quantity
Click the + on a catalog row to add it to the cart on the right. Adding an item that's already in the cart increases that line's quantity instead of creating a second line.
To change a quantity, use the – and + stepper — on the cart line, or on the catalog row itself. Stepping a line down to zero removes it after about a second; stepping it back up within that moment keeps it.
💡 Inventory-tracked items For an item you track stock on, the + stops at the quantity you have left and turns grey. |
Known Capability Gap during Beta If you need a charge item to appear twice on an invoice so that you can make edits to each item separately, switch to the invoice view to make those changes. |
Discounts and coverage
Prices in the cart reflect what the patient actually owes. If a membership coverage rule or a package the patient already owns applies, the line shows the discounted price with the original price struck through, and a short label explaining why:
Included in [plan name]: fully covered by their plan; the line reads $0.00
Discounted from [plan name]: partially covered by their plan
Included in a package: drawn from a package the patient already purchased
Where more than one discount could apply, Hint applies the best one. Undiscounted lines show a single price and no label.
Editing a line
Click the pencil on any cart line to open the familiar edit charge window - the same one you use on the invoice page - to override a price, adjust a description, or remove a membership rule. Your change updates the line and the totals right away.
Taking Payment
When the cart is finished, click Process. The payment form opens and the summary expands to show Tax and Total alongside the subtotal.
Choose a payment method. The patient's default card is already selected, so in most cases you can move straight on. If your practice passes credit card fees on to patients, a Credit Card Fees line appears and the total updates.
The button turns green and reads Process $X Now. Click it to issue the invoice and take the payment.
You land on the finished invoice.
💡 The number on the button is the number you'll charge The amount shown on the button always matches the total, so the figure you quote the patient is what they pay. Add another item with the form open and the subtotal, tax, fee, and total all update together. |
Choosing a tax profile
Once the payment form is open, the tax row shows the tax profile as a dropdown, just like the invoice page. Pick a different profile and the tax amount, total, and button amount all recalculate. Your selection is saved with the invoice. If nothing in the cart is taxable, the tax row doesn't appear at all.
Issuing without taking payment
Not collecting today? Click Issue Invoice instead. The invoice is issued and the patient can pay it later through the usual channels. The button is available only when there's something in the cart, and it's hidden while the payment form is open.
If a payment doesn't go through
If the card is declined, the invoice has already been issued and you stay on Quick Checkout with a warning. The cart is locked at that point — you can't add more items — but you can select a different payment method and try again. Reloading the page keeps that locked state.
Carts that come to $0.00
If everything in the cart is fully covered, clicking the process button will issue the invoice and mark it paid without creating a payment, and any prepaid charges or packages on it are activated.
Switching to the Full Invoice View
Quick Checkout is a focused screen, so it doesn't carry everything the invoice page does. Use the Switch to Invoice View link at the top of the cart panel to open the same invoice on the regular draft invoice page — for the invoice number, change history, emailing, or exporting to PDF.
What's Included in Beta
This beta covers the core in-person checkout flow. Supported today:
Opening Quick Checkout from a patient's chart or from the patients list
Searching and filtering the charge item and package catalog
Adding items, adjusting quantities, and editing individual lines
Live membership and package discounts, with the reason shown on each line
Live subtotal, tax (with tax profile selection), credit card fees, and grand total
Paying by saved card, a newly added card, or card reader — or issuing the invoice to be paid later
Not Included Yet
A few things still live on the regular invoice page, or aren't built yet:
Invoice details in the header: invoice number, draft badge, change history, email, and export to PDF are on the invoice page. Use Switch to Invoice View.
Changing the payer: Quick Checkout opens on the payer determined when you started; changing it in place isn't supported yet.
Discount labels in the catalog: discount reasons appear on cart lines, not on the catalog rows on the left.
Phone and tablet layouts: Quick Checkout is built for desktop screens today.
We'll update this article as new capabilities ship. Your feedback during beta directly shapes what we build next.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I get Quick Checkout turned on?
A: Reach out to your Hint contact. It's enabled per practice during the beta.
Q: Does this replace the Add Charge button?
A: For practices in the beta, Add Charges on the patients list and the $ quick action on a patient's chart both open Quick Checkout instead of the older create-charge screen. Everything else — the Charges tab, Add Invoice, and the invoice page — works exactly as before.
Q: Does opening Quick Checkout create a new invoice every time?
A: No. It opens the patient's current draft if they have a recent one, and only creates a draft when there isn't one to use.
Q: What happens with dependents?
A: The draft belongs to the payer, the same as one-off invoices today. Choosing a dependent opens the payer's Quick Checkout.
Q: Can I still override a price or remove a membership discount?
A: Yes — the pencil on a cart line opens the same edit charge window you use on the invoice page, with the same options.
Q: Can I use a card reader?
A: Yes. Card readers are available at checkout alongside saved and newly added cards.
Q: The payment failed — was the invoice still created?
A: Yes. The invoice is issued before the card is charged, so a declined payment leaves an issued, unpaid invoice. You can retry with a different payment method right from Quick Checkout.
Q: Where do I find the invoice afterward?
A: On the patient's Charges tab, exactly where invoices live today. A successful payment takes you straight to the invoice.
Q: Can read-only staff use it?
A: No. The buttons that open Quick Checkout are hidden for read-only roles, just like the existing charge actions.
Q: I'm in beta — how do I share feedback?
A: Please reach out to your Hint contact or use the feedback channel shared with you at the start of the beta. We're actively iterating and your input directly shapes what we build next.
